“Membuka Topeng” (Revealing the Mask)

Discussion and dance demonstration by Prof. Kathy Foley, professor at Department of Dance, University of California, Santa Cruz on the problem of “the four Direction and one Axis” that exists in the character of wayang and the mask. Emphasis is put on how the idea (of the Four Direction and one Axis) is bound within the philosophy and of “'Buana Ageung' (Macro Cosmos) and 'Buana Alit' (Micro Cosmos) in Indonesia as well as South East Asia. The illustration is taken from various masks in Topeng and Wayang in Indonesia (with dance and jokes or fun). The program is a collaboration of the Selasar with the USA Embassy, Jakarta, University California in Santa Cruz, and supported by Bandung International School.
