EXHIBITION CURATORIAL

What is Art Today, and Tomorrow?
This exhibition aims to showcase a profile of art forms and motifs that Selasar Sunaryo Art Space has ‘followed’ through the works of artists who have engaged with variety of its programs in the last 10 years. All the artists invited in this exhibition were asked to make a statement or definition of the ‘art’ they believe. The statement is not to conclude a sole or definitive understanding, but rather to take art practice to a deeper comprehension so that its developments can be identified as the reflection of a particular zeitgeist.
Visual and aesthetic vocabulary exploration is still important—yet not the most dominant—for most artists in this exhibition. Most works also depict various points of view and artistic execution that still depend on medium and material specialization. Representation of socio-cultural problems appears as a strongest motive. From probing the artists’ works and statements, art in the context of this exhibition is identical to the search of self and reality.
This exhibition takes into account that amid the ever-developing art discourses and practices, it is important that artists are not only driven by the current stream. Artists must also be able to play a role in guiding and taking perspective on Indonesian art in the future. In order to realize this, indeed, artists cannot work alone. Synergy among elements of the art world and the will to keep enhancing the view and understanding of art practice are no less important. For ten years, SSAS has been present amid Indonesian unique art realm and holding on to its long-standing dreams; SSAS will always hope for a dynamic world of creation and thoughts, freedom of expression and getting information, in a healthy and sustainable art world.
