On the slopes of Dago Hills, not far from the city center, a unique artspace offers arts and cultural activities to the whole community.
Constructed over four years (1993-1997) by Sunaryo and BaskoroTedjo, Selasar Sunaryo Art Space has been open to the public since September 1998. The term ’selasar’ meaning ‘verandah’, reflects the design concept, an open space that welcomes all who wish to experience art in this unique setting. The creation of the Artspace has been Sunaryo’s longstanding dream, a masterpiece dedicated to the art world and community.
Lower level spaces present artworks by emerging and established Contemporary Indonesian Artists and Contemporary Visual Art exhibitions from the Asia Pacific region. Upper Level indoor and outdoor exhibition spaces present selected works by Sunaryo including painting, sculpture, prints and installation.
Gallery B (about 210 m2), is used to present exhibitions of young artists from Indonesia as well as overseas. The space is also used to present the permanent collection of the artspace and works of artists from Indonesia and overseas.
Wing Gallery (about 48 m2), is used to display exhibitions of work by young artists from Indonesia as well as overseas. The space is also used to present the permanent collection of the artspace which includes selected works of artists from Indonesia and overseas.
Stone Garden (sekitar 190 m2), ruang terbuka yang digunakan untuk memamerkan karya seni Sunaryo yang terbuat dari batu.
Aula Bawah (Bale Handap) is a multi purpose space used for discussions, performances, events and workshops. The building is inspired by traditional Javenese architecture with an open terrace. Bale Handap is separated from the major building, located between the Bamboo House on the lowest level of Selasar.
Bamboo House (about 76 m2), a modest house made of bamboo. Visiting artists often spend the night whilst involved in a program and is also used by artists in residence, and special guests.
Amphitheater (about 198 m2), an open circular space with large screen, has a maximum capacity of 300 people and was specially built and structured for staging performingarts events, poetry readings, screenings and other cultural events.
Cinderamata Selasar (Selasar Shop), a shop where people can purchase and array of arts and cultural books and journals as well as gifts and souvenirs.
Kopi Selasar (Selasar Cafe) (about 157 m2), a large outdoor cafe is the perfect place to unwind and enjoy excellent coffee, snacks and lunch, use wireless, or just enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Dago hill.
