The exhibition, designed by Goethe-Institut in cooperation with the
Museum for Picture-books in Troisdorf and presenting 13 representative
positions, gives an insight into the creative work of German
picture-book illustrators. Aside of internationally renowned classics,
young artists will be introduced, whose work reflect recent trends in
German picture-book illustration.
In detail, the exhibition presents the works of the following
artists: Jutta Bauer, Rotraut Susanne Berner, Nadia Budde, Klaus
Ensikat,
Wolf Erlbruch, Jacky Gleich, Nikolaus Heidelbach, Sybille Hein,
Janosch, Karoline Kehr, Axel Scheffler, Philip Waechter dan Katja
Wehner. The 13 participating artists were invited to choose five
illustrations from among one of their picture-books and to shortly
state the reasons for their choice. Thus, the exhibition is an
opportunity to personally and immediately meet the artists.
The exhibition shows the high quality and astonishing variety of German
picture-book illustration. The exposed works cover a broad spectrum of
modern picture-book arts from water colour over collage to digital
experiments. The artist's perspective is sometimes naive, sometimes
sceptical, sometimes bold or also intellectual. A few artists paly with
imaginary worlds and dreams, while others distort reality in a cheerful
and bizzare way. Expressive pictures with strong colours contrast with
gentle and subtle illustrations.
